About City

The Spree, which flows into the Havel (a tributary of the Elbe) in the western borough of Spandau, runs through Berlin. The various lakes formed by the Spree, Havel, and Dahme in the western and southeastern boroughs, the largest of which is Lake Müggelsee, are among the city's most prominent topographical features. Berlin has a mild seasonal climate due to its location in the European Plain. Forests, parks, gardens, rivers, canals, and lakes make up around a third of the city's total area.  The Berlin dialect is a variety of the Lusatian-New Marchian dialects, and it is found in Central Germany.

Berlin was the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg (1417–1701), the Kingdom of Prussia (1701–1918), the German Empire (1871–1918), the Weimar Republic (1919–1933), and Nazi Germany (1933–1945) after being first documented in the 13th century and located at the crossroads of two important historic trade routes. In the 1920s, Berlin was the world's third-largest municipality.  Following World War II and the winning countries' capture of the city, West Berlin became a de facto exclave of West Germany, bounded by the Berlin Wall (which stood from August 1961 to November 1989) and East German territory.  East Berlin was designated as the capital of East Germany, whereas Bonn was designated as the capital of West Germany. Following German reunification in 1990, Berlin was once again designated as the country's capital.
